How We Learn

Our Educational Philosophy

At the center of the Ecole pedagogy is the insight that each person and each person's development are unique. We know without a doubt that children and teens learn best when they follow their own curiosity, when their individuality is celebrated, and when they feel secure enough to let their full potential unfold. These core beliefs from the foundation of the Ecole’s academic program.

Profound Immersion in Core Subjects

Each trimester, our students enroll in three academic courses, diving deep into their chosen subjects. Immersive teaching allows learning to extend beyond the subject matter; students form connections between key academic concepts and build bridges across disciplines. Through intensive study, our learners become fully immersed in their courses, gaining a deep and broad understanding of the subject matter and its interdisciplinary connections to other fields. Teaching follows an inquiry-based approach where students are encouraged to engage their curiosity, to ask big questions, and to find joy in discovery.

A Supportive Learning Environment

Our academic program is challenging and supportive. We encourage our students to set high expectations for themselves and we partner with them in reaching their goals. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the specific learning objectives and interests of each student. Ecole classes are held in small, close-knit groups. Teachers are able to follow each learner’s progress closely, providing challenges in areas of strength and encouragement where it is most needed.

Flexible Courses

Each Ecole student works with an academic advisor to design their own academic journey. Together with their advisor, students curate their own course plan which caters to each individual’s needs, abilities, and interests. Students are not strictly grouped by age or grade but rather are encouraged to find the subjects and course material that best match their needs and interests. This allows our learners to explore their passions, amplify their strengths and receive support where they need it most.

Meaningful Feedback

We are convinced of the value of meaningful feedback. Instead of traditional letter grades, students receive comprehensive narrative reports describing their progress as a whole learner. Teachers describe strengths, and name areas for growth in future courses.
